HISTORY OF SUNRISE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
Sunrise Christian School (SCS) is an incorporated body under the governance, oversight and spiritual covering of the Adelaide Crusade Centre Incorporated, trading as Adelaide Christian Centre (ACC), also known as Sturt Street. Sunrise Christian School was founded in 1978 as a division of Adelaide Crusade Centre Inc (now Adelaide Christian Centre – Sturt Street) in the churches premises known as Sunrise House in Wattle Street, Fullarton. It commenced with 32 students and 2 teachers and the support of a number of enthusiastic pioneer parents and helpers. Over the years Sunrise Christian School has grown from one Campus of 32 students to 5 Campuses and over 900 students. Currently Sunrise Christian School has five Campuses – Fullarton Grade Rec - 7, Paradise Grade Rec - 7, Morphett Vale Grade Rec - 7, Marion Grade Rec – 12 and Naracoorte Grade Rec – 7.
HISTORY OF TEMPLE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE
In 1983, a sister school, Temple Christian College also an incorporated body under the governance, oversight and spiritual covering of the Adelaide Crusade Centre was developed. Temple Christian College is a secondary school ranging from Grades 7 – 12. Initially Temple College shared the Unley Park facilities of the House of Tabor, now Tabor Adelaide, which itself had its roots in the Crusade Bible College, which was a department of ACC. Temple went on to expand and eventually purchased the Hardy’s Winery Buildings where it established its current Mile End Campus. In 2001 Temple opened its second Campus as a feeder school for Years 7-10, in close association with Bethany Christian School where it is co-located at Paralowie. Currently Temple Christian College has two Campuses – Mile End Campus Grade 7 – 12, and Bethany Campus Grade 7 – 11. The Bethany Campus commenced Senior Secondary schooling (Grade 11) as of 2010 and will be offering a Grade 7 - 12 programme as of 2011.
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUNRISE AND TEMPLE
Both Schools have grown through challenging times and have developed strong and vibrant cultures. Sunrise has maintained a focus on Bible-based curriculum, character development and Christ-likeness and has shared its drive for academic excellence with its sister school Temple Christian College. Temple has cherished worship and this has been evident in its assemblies and in the devotional life of the School. Both Schools are separate associations with separate registrations.
Following several years of prayer and discussion The Adelaide Christian Centre Board initiated the idea to bring the two schools closer together and in late 2003 a process began. The Board of Directors vision is to move toward a fully synchronized school network led by one Senior Leadership Executive managing both schools. However, due to both schools standing strong and independently for many years it was known that this was going to be a long, detailed and complex process with potential change of direction and goals as time moved on. In mid 2004 as a step toward the goal the process of one Business Manager for both Sunrise and Temple was implemented.
Over the following months thoughts were discussed and plans put in place and by the end of 2006 several key goals were achieved. A number of these included; a new Constitution being adopted, the melding of two school Councils into one, and the development of common policies. This new group was to be called "Sunrise Temple Group of Schools" (STGOS).
In Term 2 of 2006 the Principal Mr. Kym Golding, his personal assistant and the 2 finance administration employees of Sunrise moved to the one location called “Suite 6” based on the Temple site of the Mile End Campus. Here they were joined by the Business Manager of both Temple and Sunrise Mr. Toshi Umehara. During 2006 the establishment of a central finance and administration structure was put in place. In early 2007 this was implemented and the finance team grew accordingly. As the demand of running 7 Campuses from the one central location increased - Sunrise employed their own Business Manager. In March 2008 we welcomed Mr. Mark Nokes to the Suite 6 team as he commenced in the dual role of Business Manager for Sunrise and Manager of Corporate Services for STGOS. Mr. Toshi Umehara’s role moved from being the STGOS Business Manager to the Temple Business Manager and he also operates in a dual function as the Manager of Finances for STGOS. The process of joining both Sunrise and Temple at a finance and administration level is a delicate process and will continue to develop as the team find their feet and settle into new roles as one administration body.
GOVERNANCE DEVELOPMENT
At the start of 2007 further development took place and collectively Sunrise Christian School and Temple Christian College were to now be known as Sunrise Temple Schools (STS). Both are an integral part of the outreach ministry, vision and mandate of Adelaide Christian Centre.
A new structure was put in place and new roles developed. The Senior Leadership Executive (SLE) consisting of the Mr. Kym Golding – Principal of Sunrise Christian School, Mr. Marcel Rijken – Principal of Temple Christian College, Mr. Toshi Umehara – Business Manager for Temple, Mr. Mark Nokes - Business Manager for Sunrise, Mr. David Fontaine – Director of Studies at Sunrise, and Mr. Rod Klimionok who is the Temple Christian College - Bethany Campus Principal.
Mid 2008 saw Mr. Kym Golding appointed the Head of Schools for STS and also the manager of the SLE and he was given the responsibility for the future unification and development of “Sunrise Temple Schools” (STS). This team meets weekly to continue to grow and develop the vision for the STS.
Up until December 2008 Sunrise Temple Schools was made up of two registered schools being Sunrise Christian School and Temple Christian College and consisted of seven Campuses.
ACS - ADELAIDE CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS DEVELOPMENT
In January 2009 some significant changes took place. Our Governance structure became a separate Incorporated Body and changed the name from Sunrise Temple Schools to Adelaide Christian Schools (ACS). Not only did the name change but we also added another school under our banner. Whyalla Christian School approached the ACS Board late in 2008 requesting assistance with the running of their school. After several negotiations it was agreed that the Whyalla Christian School would become Sunrise Christian School, Whyalla under the Governance of Adelaide Christian Schools.
2009 was a very busy year for ACS. Not only was it the first year for Whyalla, but it was also the year where planning and provision took place for the development of our first International ACS school. For many years Papua New Guinea had been in the hearts of our Leaders and Board members. Unbeknown to us, God’s plan for this partnership was to evolve during 2009. After many, many hours of discussions, planning, meetings, travel, prayer and hard work, "Sunrise Bethel Christian School" opened the doors for Education to 90 students on 1st February 2010. Starting a school in another Country is one thing, but adjusting to a completely different culture is another. This development has not been without its challenges, but with God’s grace, wisdom and direction, and much patience and understanding from all involved, the school is running extremely well and lives are being changed.
